It was a game that Oregon's women's basketball team would likely have lost last season. Three point sharpshooter Taylor Lilley was not having a good night, 0-for-7 from the floor and zero points.
That was a frequent prescription for disaster a year ago.
But with Paul Westhead's run-and-fun offense, there are plenty of opportunities for someone other than Lilley to step forward and carry the load.
This time it was Amanda Johnson, who scored a career-high 32 points in the Ducks' 95-68 victory over the Portland Pilots Wednesday night in front of 1,441 in Mac Court. The sophomore from Santa Rosa, Calif. also grabbed 11 rebounds.
"My first impression was that she is a very hard worker. She is tenacious," said Westhead of Johnson. "She is a potential big who can outrun people in the press, get open, and be able to score. I'd say she is an expected surprise."
Oregon (6-1) pulled away early from the Pilots (3-3) midway into the first when a couple of three-pointers by Micaela Cocks gave the Ducks a 29-17 lead with 9:41 left.
Laiken Dollente cut the Pilot deficit back to single digits (34-25) for a moment with a jumper at the 7:20 mark, but that would be the closest the West Coast Conference squad would get. Dollente led the Pilots with 23 points.
Although Lilley was shut out in the first half, the senior guard did get back on track early in the second frame with a couple of dribble-drives to the hoop. She wound up with 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting, including two shots from long distance.
"We give her (Lilley) the green light to let them go," Westhead said. "She'll settle in and start stroking the ball. She had some good looks in the first half. She is just having some bad luck. She is too good of a shooter and too good of a player."
Victoria Kenyon added 13 for the Ducks and Cocks managed 12 points as well. Kenyon was a hard matchup for the Pilots. Not many 6-2 posts in the WCC can step out and drill the three-pointer as Kenyon did. The redshirt junior from Queensland, Australia hit a trio of treys.
"We definitely had a good rhythm," Kenyon said. "I was taking the shots I was given. I was lucky and they fell today."
Oregon held a commanding 49-32 halftime lead and cruised from there. The Ducks' largest lead was 27 at 92-65 with a little over two minutes remaining.
One concern Westhead had after the game was turnovers. Oregon committed 15 turnovers, which is too much for the coach's liking.
"I would like to see less turnovers, hopefully 11-12 all the time," he said. "I'm greedy for offensive rebounds. Twelve is not nearly enough, it should be in the 18 to 24 area. They need to do better, and I know they will."
Oregon will get a day off before heading back into action Friday to face an undefeated Boise State team for a 7 pm tip at Mac Court. A ticket stub to the Civil War football game can be exchanged for a free general admission. The Ducks then have Saturday off before hosting Long Beach State for a 2 pm tip on Sunday.
