Oregon Too Much For 49ers

Rick Morgan

Oregon's high octane offense was more than Long Beach State could cope with as the Lady Ducks cruised past the 49ers 102-70 Sunday afternoon at McArthur Court.

Long Beach State had no answer for Oregon's senior guard combo of Micaela Cocks (27 pts) and Taylor Lilley (25 pts). It was a career high for Cocks who missed only one shot on the night, going 8-9 from the field and hitting all five of her attempts from behind the arc.

After a sluggish second half in Friday's win over Boise State, head coach Paul Westhead indicated it would be a point of emphasis for the Ducks to be more aggressive for a full forty minutes and his team took that message to heart.

Taking a 52-28 lead into the break, Oregon came out in the second half and shot the ball at a 55% clip.

The 49ers were pressured into 28 turnovers on the night, translating into 33 points for the Ducks.

Three other Ducks posted double figures; Jasmin Holliday (13), Amanda Johnson (11) and Nicole Canepa (10). Long Beach State was led by Lauren Sims' 20 point effort.

"We ended the home swing in good fashion," said Westhead. "I thought our players in the first half abut the ten minute mark kind of established how the game was going to go. They were going to get up and press, turn the ball over and cause problems. Then our offense was generated off the defense again."

"It really helps when you have players like Micaela Cocks and Taylor Lilley burying three pointers... Nice combo out there."

"I just went out like every other game," said Cocks of her career high. "Shots dropped, my team mates found me."

"We made a point of executing and to keep applying the pressure . That's part of the system. Just keep going, keep going until the other team breaks."

It was the last home contest of Oregon's non-conference schedule. The Ducks hit the road to play Georgia Tech, Wyoming and Utah before returning to Mac Court to open Pac-10 play Washington on New Year's Day. Tip off is set for 7:00 pm. Washington State completes the opening series on Sunday at 2:00.
