Ducks Hold Off Gaels 15-11

The Oregon Ducks held off the Iona Gaels 15-11 Saturday afternoon at Pape` Field to snap a three game losing streak.

Bina Barrett scored four goals to lead the Ducks, with Jana Drummond and Ann Swicklik each adding three.

Oregon built a 10-5 margin at the break, but the Gaels put together 5-2 run to close the gap to 12-10 two-thirds of the way through the second half.

Head coach Jen Larsen settled down here squad and a more patient offensive attack down the stretch produced results when Dom Christiansen and Barrett found the net back-to-back, Christiansen on a free position shot following an Iona foul, Barrett unassisted after Oregon won the ensuing draw.

"I was really pleased with the defensive transition," said Larsen then pointed to her areas of concern; "taking care of the ball on offense, making some really smart decisions - I think were are making a couple hurried decisions and we really don't really need to hurry, so - try to work on that."

Keeper Salliebeth Finnegan faced 16 shots on goal, saving 5 to backstop the Oregon defense.

In their next action, the Ducks host Cincinnati next Saturday, March 20 at Pape` Field, with the opening draw set for 1:00 pm.

Ducks Bounce St. Bonaventure

Oregon stormed to a 22-8 victory in their 2010 home opener against St. Bonaventure Sunday afternoon at Pape` Field.

The Ducks were paced by Alex Breiner's four goals and pair of assists as Oregon improved to 2-0, having defeated Jacksonville in their opener the week before.

"I was pleased all around," said head coach Jen Larsen. "I like that we were able to get everybody on to that field and be part of that victory.

"Our emphasis right now is getting a solidified group on the defensive end. We are obviously running a lot of people in the midfield . offensively we are just going with who is hot and we are just getting a lot of people the ball as it goes around."

Is this perhaps the deepest bench Larsen has enjoyed as she starts her sixth year as the program's only head coach?

"I would say it is a very deep team, yes," she said. "It is really nice to be able to work as many people in as we are right now."

The Ducks are part of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and for the first time this season the conference champion will be awarded an automatic NCAA berth. Stanford and Denver are expected to be the major obstacles for Oregon to win that invitation.

The Ducks face national power North Carolina and William & Mary on the road before returning to host Louisville at Pape` Field on March 6th.
