Amanda Johnson scored 19 points leading the Ducks to 72-67 win over Utah

Ducks Hold On For 72-67 Win
Rick Morgan

Amanda Johnson and Nia Jackson each scored 19 points to lead the Oregon Ducks to a more difficult than it should have been 72-67 win over the Utah Utes Thursday evening at Matthew Knight Arena.

"Good to get a win tonight, we got off to a good start," said head coach Paul Westhead. "We struggled a little bit to finish, but we'll get better at that. Amanda Johnson really helped us tonight.

After missing two months and 11 games due to a broken thumb, Johnson's return is a welcome addition to the team.

"She's fine and dandy," said Westhead. "She just needs one or two more games to get her rhythm going again. I'm hopeful if we can string together a couple wins we can get better finishing up games."

Ducks Sign 21
Don Smalley

Chip Kelly announced the Oregon Ducks' 2012 recruiting class and for the second year in a row, it to be an impressive one.

Of the 21 signed newcomers, nine were considered high school All-Americans, breaking a team record that was set last year when eight of the 23 were so decorated.

At the top of that list is defensive lineman Arik Armstead from Elk Grove, Calif. The 6-foot-8, 280-pounder was considered a 5-star offensive lineman, but he prefers, as do Kelly and his staff, for him to play defensive end.

'One of the things that intrigued us was his athleticism," Kelly said at his press conference this morning. He's a defensive lineman. We're not bringing him in here to play both ways."

Armstead is also expected to play basketball for Dana Altman as well with Kelly's blessing.

Civil War Report

Beavers Bounce Ducks 76-71
Rick Morgan

"Well, it was the turnovers," said Oregon head coach Dana Altman. And indeed it was - 23 of them - that doomed the Ducks in the 336th Civil War Sunday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena.

Converting those turnovers into 31 points - 20 in the second half - Oregon State stung the Ducks with a 76-71 victory.

"I was really disappointed," said Altman. "We did not execute . I don't want to take anything away from Oregon State because their length and athleticism gave us problems. But we did a poor job of handling the ball. Defensively in the second half was not one of our better efforts."

Jared Cunningham's 27 points paced the Beavers and three others reached double figures in handing Oregon their first loss in five outings.

Beavers Pull Away From Ducks
Don Smalley

Even with Nia Jackson and Amanda Johnson back from injuries, Oregon's dynamic duo wasn't enough to overcome Oregon State's late rally in a 67-60 loss  in Corvallis.

Ali Gibson killed the Ducks with 23 points, including five three-pointers, as the Beavers improved to 4-5 in conference play.

Although Gibson led the Beavers, it was Alyssa Martin's deep three that capped a 14-4 run to give the home team a 59-57 lead with just 2:47 left. Gibson hit another trey from the right wing to extend the Duck deficit to 62-57 and Oregon was in scramble mode for the remaining two minutes.

Down seven with less than a minute left, Jordan Loera's three from the corner with 23 seconds left breathed a little life into the Oregon team, but that would be the last basket Oregon would score.
