Ducks Break Broncos

Rick Morgan

A sluggish second half couldn't spoil the enthusiasm head coach Paul Westhead held for the performance of his team in the opening stanza as the Lady Ducks pasted unbeaten Boise State 88-61 Friday evening at McArthur Court.

Oregon shot 50% from the floor and created turnovers by the bushel with their press, eventually scoring a total of 31 points thanks to 26 Bronco miscues.

Five players posted double figures, sophomore forward Amanda Johnon continuing her recent fine play to lead the team with 20.

"We thought that our run had to be sharp tonight and in the first half it was," said Westhead. "We were pushing the ball as good as we have perhaps this season. Now our role is to sustain that for forty minutes."

"In the first half Nia Jackson was pushing that ball down the court and finding open people and that is really hard to defend."

Jackson was also a factor defensively, leading the team with five steals. As part of the double team or in reading the passing lane she was a constant burr under the saddle for the Broncos.

On the turnovers and off the boards, Oregon was quick to find a teammate near the basket as their 21 assists will attest.

Jasmine Holliday led the team 13 rebounds, and the seven she grabbed off the offensive glass led to a 12-point night for the forward.

"I just think all of us are really getting a lot more confident. That's mainly it," she said. ". We just like to win and we really like this system."

Westhead took note of Thursday's Civil War victory to open his post game remarks.

"Go Ducks, Wow, what a game. What a game. Electrifying. It spills over and permeates everything that you do when you see a team play like that last night. It's good for the University, it's good for women's basketball, it's good for Eugene, Oregon. I'm really happy for Chip Kelly and that team. It's a pleasure being around them."

Oregon returns to action Sunday, hosting Long Beach State for a 2:00 pm tip-off.
