Dana Altman's introduction to Pac-10 basketball was a harsh one Thursday as Arizona handled the Ducks 76-57 in front of a sparse crowd of 6,498 in Mac Court.
The Wildcats dared Oregon to shoot all night long and the Ducks obliged though hardly anything fell in the hoop. The Ducks shot a miserable 35 percent from the field, including 1-of-17 from the three-point line.
"We're not a great shooting team, but we're much better than we showed tonight," Altman said. "Hopefully we'll start to click. I was hoping we would click tonight, but we will practice hard tomorrow and get ready for Saturday."
Jeremy Jacob led the Ducks with 17 points and four rebounds and was the only Duck to reach double figures. Joevan Catron had nine points, but he was in foul trouble early, never finding an offensive rhythm before fouling out in the second half.
Arizona, on the other hand, found its rhythm from the opening tipoff, starting the game with an 11-2 run and never looking back.
"Right from the start, we had a bad shot, they rebound and put it in a couple times all of a sudden its 11-2," Altman said.
If Oregon hopes to compete in the Pac-10, falling behind early is just a recipe for disaster given their struggles to shoot the ball on a consistent basis. This was the Ducks third straight game shooting under 35 percent from the field.
The Wildcats were much better at finding the mark, hitting for nearly 56 percent from the field at a 25-of-45 clip. The boys from the desert also out pounded the Ducks on the glass 40-27, their largest deficit since the Duke game.
Oregon's one bright spot was their full court press which bothered the Cats enough to force 19 turnovers.
"The press was effective for us," Altman said. "When you force 19 turnovers, you're doing well. Our press was working. We just didn't capitalize on it."
Oregon has one last chance to win at Mac Court Saturday when the Sun Devils come calling.
"We really love to win for ourselves and our fans and the people that have been coming here for years," Jacob said on the last men's basketball game ever at Mac Court.
