Oregon Opens With Win

Oregon built an early advantage then held on through the last event to outpoint Quinnipiac and Azuza Pacific the season opener for the Acrobatics and Tumbling team.

A sport still in it's infancy at the collegiate level, the three way competition filled 1,953 of Matthew Knight Arena's seats Friday evening offering a glimpse that a fan base of reasonable numbers may exist for the sport as an intercollegiate offering.

In the program's third year of competition, Oregon returns as the defending NCATA champions - a loop that consists of five other teams at this point - with two new programs recently announced and two more set to announce. One current program, Maryland - the team Oregon defeated last spring for the title - is in fundraising mode to compete beyond the current season.

Each meet is a mix of compulsory skills competitions and freestyle stunts in a series of individual and group heats. As in gymnastics, each element is assigned a value based on difficulty with the four judge panel deducting points for flaws in execution. The totals for each heat are tabulated for a final score.

Oregon topped the tally with 285.23 points with Azuza Pacific at 280.73 and Quinnipiac 274.62.

For the first event of the season, head coach Felecia Mulkey was pleased.

"I think the acro and tumbling events played out the way we planned, but in the toss events we could gain some points," she said. "We lost three plus points in the team routine, we've got to clean that up a lot. We can chalk that up to nerves, but there are a number of things we can do to slow it down and clean it up."

With a limited number of programs available to schedule, Oregon has only one remaining home meet - Sunday, March 4 vs. Baylor at 1:00 pm - before hitting the road for four events in advance of the Championship meet at Baylor April 26-28.
