Civil War Fought To A Draw
Rick Morgan

It was a good news/bad news day for the Oregon Ducks in their pair of Civil War hardwood match-ups on Saturday. In Corvallis, the men's team was throttled by the Beavers 62-42, snapping a two game winning streak, while the women ran past Oregon State 82-62 in the final Civil War match-up to be held at McArthur Court.

The Ducks were outscored 30-17 in the second half at Gill Coliseum and the Beavers claimed their first season sweep in the series since 1992-93 and the worst defeat for Oregon at the hands of Oregon State in 28 years.

Sophomores Matt Humphrey and Malcolm Armstead paced Oregon with 10 points apiece as the Ducks once again struggled in the face of the Beaver's 1-3-1 trapping zone defense, shooting a miserable 14-47 from the floor (29.8%) and committing 17 turnovers.

E.J. Singler's three point basket - Oregon made only two of their 17 attempts from behind the stripe - gave the Ducks a 19-18 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half, but the lead was short lived.

The Beaver's Omari Johnson responded in kind and the Beavers would not trail again. Johnson - a seldom used forward who was given a start to help solve Oregon State's shooting woes - came through with a team leading 18 points.

Pac-10 Champs Reload

While football signing day tends to grab all the headlines, this week was a big day from recruits for other sports as well. Looking to maintain the hardware haul that has become routine over at the Bowerman Building, Director of Track and Field Vin Lanana announced incoming classes of seven men and eight women athletes.

Sam Crouser of Gresham adds to a deep pool of throwers for the Ducks on the men's side and 2009 Pan American games 5,000k champion Sarah Andrews strengthens Oregon's middle distance stable for the women's team.

SOCCER TEAMS ADDS FOUR

Three preps and a transfer were inked by head coach Tara Erickson. After signing a large group last season, the Ducks recruited to need in adding a keeper, mid-field, forward and defender for next fall. Tualatin's Lindsay Parlee joined the Oregon squad after playing for the nationally ranked Washington State Cougars last year.

OFF TO A GOOD START

Oregon's newest team claimed second place in the first ever intercollegiate Team Stunts & Gymnastics competion held last weekend in Atlanta, Georgia.

Added to the mix nearly when Oregon reinstated baseball, head coach Felicia Mulkey spent three years assembling the squad and collaborating with other programs around the nation to develop the meet format employed by the athletes.

The Ducks will play host to two meets this spring. Ohio State, Georgia and Western Azusa will join the Ducks for the Oregon Invitational on February 21, then on March 7, Oregon will host Cal Poly and Western Oregon in the Northwest Invitational.

The team will also offer a demonstration during halftime of the Oregon/California game on Feb 20.

The NCAA's restriction to one home visit per recruit didn't seem to tie the hands of first year head coach Chip Kelly. Two seasons spent on the circuit as the offensive coordinator had demonstrated Kelly was willing - and to a refreshing degree, able - to expand Oregon's recruiting footprint into high school football hotspots other than California.

In his first season as the in home closer, Kelly netted 10 from Baja Oregon, but also pulled in a trio from Texas, a pair from Florida and Arizona, and one each from Illinois, Michigan, Utah and North Carolina. Oregon also added two of the state's premier seniors, putting the final tally 13-10 in favor of "states other than" the Golden State.

Wednesday's most pleasant surprise was DT Ricky Heimuli of Salt Lake City, Utah and Kelly acknowledged that a program that boasted of grads - and SLC natives - Haloti Ngata and Will Tukuafu played a role in a decision that went down to the wire.

"We felt pretty good about Ricky all along," said Kelly. "Him and (defensive line coach) Jerry (Azinarro) had a pretty good relationship throughout this whole thing. Just a great young man, kinda how he handled the process, very orderly in what they did in bringing in their final group the last week. They kind of ran the recruiting the right way."

It was the trio from Texas that served notice of the Duck's expanded ambitions. Athlete Josh Huff - another late decision - joined running backs Dontae Williams and Lache Seastrunk in coming to Eugene from deep in the hearta - newly opened territory for the program. As well as sharing a Lone Star heritage with current RB LaMichael James, the newest Texans bring "speed and more speed" to the Oregon backfield.

"Real talented player," said Kelly of one-time USC commit Seastrunk. "Can flat out fly. Very, very productive, catches the ball really, really well coming out of the backfield. He is really put together, he's a little bit like LaMicheal  - probably a little bigger than LaMichael was coming out of high school. A really strong competitor. That speed aspect just jumps off the table - just kinda wow."
